PayPoint Romania is celebrating 15 years since the official launch of the bill payment service on the Romanian market and registering the first bill paid on the terminal.

15 years later, the portfolio of partners has over 250 suppliers, the network of payment points counts approximately 20,000 stores, and the volume of bill payment transactions recorded since the introduction of the service on the market exceeds 800 million.

PayPoint entered the local market in 2007, with the acquisition of the Paystore company, with the main objective of accelerating the business to become the main operator of cash payments and electronic top-ups through retail points. A year later, in August 2008, the company announced its entry into a new segment in the retail environment, that of bill payment.

During the next 15 years, the development of the company was dynamic and accelerated, the growth being both organic and as a result of acquisitions. Thus, in October 2017 PayPoint finalized the takeover of Payzone SA, consolidating its position in the retail environment, and in February 2022 it accessed the smart-tech area by acquiring 24pay, the payment application for public transport with the largest expansion at national level. In addition, last year all terminals on the market were replaced with new POS devices and, with them, the company turned its attention to a new service: accepting cards for payment for purchases made at PayPoint partner locations.

These acquisitions have supported and accelerated the growth and diversification of the business by adding new segments and by aligning with the new market trends: money transfer, parcels, payment by bank transfer, electronic currency, lotto and many others. Thus, at this moment, the PayPoint partner portfolio counts over 250 suppliers from various fields, for which payments can be made in the approximately 20,000 partner stores. Since the introduction of the service on the Romanian market and until the end of the 2022-2023 financial year, PayPoint Romania has processed a total of over 800 million bill payment transactions, with utilities having the highest share.

“The history of PayPoint has demonstrated that Romanians appreciate simple, safe and fast payment solutions that help them save time and enjoy what matters. In everything we do, we take into account their needs, the market developments, we anticipate trends and try to always be present with innovative solutions. 15 years ago, the launch of the Bill Payment service on terminals, in the retail environment, was announced; now, under PayPoint’s umbrella, we are developing the most extensive national network of POS that accepts payments for a varied range of services – some atypical for the retail environment; we are present in the digital payments segment with a complete e-wallet, through which Romanians can make recurring payments online; we have a network of AVMs that meet the needs of those who emphasize unassisted services, and the investments for business development will continue. We are honored by the trust that our consumers and partners have in us, we thank them all for being with us and we promise to stay with them with relevant services, products and technologies,” said Utku Ogrendil, CEO of PayPoint Romania.
