A Sustainable Festival Experience at Electric Castle 2023

In a world where environmental issues are becoming increasingly acute, Electric Castle encourages its audience to experience the festival in a sustainable way: from a separate waste collection that brings benefits for the restoration of Bánffy Castle to the responsible consumption of available resources, participants can make their own contribution to creating a greener and more environmentally friendly edition.

The “Recycle, Lidl Donates” initiative continues this year as well. Each collected PET bottle or aluminum can through the three separate collection machines at the festival means a donation of 1 leu from Lidl Romania towards the restoration of the castle. Since 2019, Lidl Romania has invested a total of over 540,000 lei in renovating the castle, which has been used for roof repairs, flooring, and other interventions.

With the support of Lidl Romania, separate waste collection at the festival will be carried out, and the waste will be transported to specialized facilities for recycling. To ensure they are not missed by participants, the collection stations are transformed into works of art by Community 156, a group of high school students from the School of Fine Arts in Cluj, led by Professor Georgian Mazerschi. Additionally, the ASAP Recycling Park, an eco-amusement park built around separate collection and upcycling, with the help of Lidl Romania, returns to Electric Castle for the second consecutive year, offering even more workshops and interactive and educational activities. “Truth or Recycle” and “Recycling Wheel” are just two of the proposals through which participants can discover new uses for plastic or learn about separate collection and recycling while playing and winning ASAP merchandise prizes.

“Greener” this year means the planting of 2,000 trees in the spring by the festival’s team and fans, an initiative supported by Banca Transilvania. The tree planting will continue over the next 3 years in multiple stages, transforming the campsite from a simple field into a forested area.

The commitment of Electric Castle to fully restore the area after each edition is supported by OMV. With the company’s assistance, the entire festival area will have a replanted grass carpet after the 9th edition of Electric Castle. Under the motto “The grass is greener where you take care of it,” the organizers plan to replant after each edition in the coming years.

Whether at home or in the EC Village, responsible consumption of water, electricity, and other resources are simple gestures to limit individual impact on the environment. The running water at the Royal Showers by Lidl Romania and the sinks in the EC Village use a timed system, saving 30% of energy and water consumption compared to the traditional system. For extra effort, there is the “Energy Playground,” an area where participants can generate energy by pedaling on dynamo bicycles or engaging in other activities.

Over 120 buses and trains, departing every half an hour, are the options provided by the organizers to limit the use of cars. However, those who choose to come by car are encouraged to carpool with their friends, as the organizers offer free parking for cars with all seats occupied and announce special prizes for passengers.
