This year, the FAN Courier Foundation, in collaboration with FAN Courier, has been involved in nearly 90 actions and projects with social impact in local and regional communities. These medium and long-term projects aim to support education, environment, social cases, culture, entrepreneurship, and the preservation of the national heritage.

In partnership with the National Library of Romania (BnaR), the “Free Miorița” Association, and the “IRASM” Technological Irradiation Center, the FAN Courier Foundation participates in the rehabilitation and reintroduction into the public circuit of destructured funds – books and manuscripts – held by the National Library of Romania (BNaR) for over 70 years. The project, titled “National Memory,” started in February 2022 and aims to save as many of the 4 million units as possible, consisting of books, periodicals, and maps on paper, managed by BNaR since its reopening in 1955. The volume of documents in the Library’s custody has constantly grown over time, but for objective reasons, they could not be maintained and organized according to all library rules, thus they are at risk of being destroyed or impossible to use.

“National Memory is a new and extremely important project we have joined because we need to leave our children the history of this country, as presented in the documents collected over time. Along with other project partners, we have managed to clean over 15 tons of destructured funds, which represents almost 2,000 hours of activity. The destructured funds consist of books, periodicals, and maps dating between 1850 and 1990, but as the project progresses, it is estimated that publications before 1850 will be discovered. Through the Foundation, we intend to get involved in projects to modernize and equip the BnaR Restoration Department, thus helping the team of specialists to work in optimal conditions and, on the other hand, the project itself, to accelerate the rescue of as many documents as possible whose historical value is huge,” said Magda Popescu, Executive Director of the FAN Courier Foundation.

“National Memory” thus adds to the long-term project portfolio of the Foundation, which has been running for seven years, the most well-known being the “High School Student” scholarship program.

The “High School Student” scholarship program, launched in 2018, has reached its fifth generation and 100 financially supported children. The program is aimed at eighth-grade students from rural areas who have been admitted to high school in the city and do not have the financial resources to attend high school. Starting with 17 students, the project marked the graduation of the second generation of students this year. The Foundation continues to support all those who want to pursue university courses, so the graduates of the first generation are already in their second year of college.

“All the students passed the baccalaureate exam and were admitted to college, so the ‘High School Student’ program has transformed into ‘Student at University’ for 36 graduates. Two generations of students have had remarkable results after four years of receiving scholarships from the FAN Courier Foundation: 26 students scored over 9 in the baccalaureate and 20 were admitted to college with a grade over 9. We are proud of them and glad to be by their side on their journey. The ‘High School Student’ scholarships help students with limited financial means by covering expenses for accommodation, transport, meals, clothing, and stationery. The innovation of the program is that the scholarships are awarded directly to minors in their bank account, and they can manage the money themselves for their needs. Thus, a very important consequence of the project is the financial responsibility of the scholarship holder. The level of scholarships is not related to academic results, but to funding needs, each student having a different amount of money available, covering the expenses mentioned above,” said the Executive Director of the FAN Courier Foundation.

The list of projects with social impact in local and regional communities also includes the “Light for Romania” program and the reforestation project.

In partnership with the non-governmental organization “Free Miorița,” the Foundation has brought, literally, light to rural communities without access to electricity for six years. In the “Light for Romania” project, 141 families with 510 direct beneficiaries (263 adults and 237 children) in 68 localities and 29 counties have been connected to energy. In total, 126 photovoltaic systems with 141 installed panels were installed, and 15 connections to the public network were made.

Through the reforestation project, FAN Courier, through the FAN Courier Foundation and its partners, has planted 80,000 seedlings on an area of 18 hectares, in 9 localities with degraded lands or in areas at risk of desertification, between 2017-2023. Given the rapid deterioration of the environment and the increasing risk of desertification in Romania, especially in the southeast, FAN Courier considers any action and project that aims to contribute to stopping the climate disaster imperative.

For 7 years, the FAN Courier Foundation has been continuously focused on developing projects with an impact on local communities that correspond to the values of the Foundation and FAN Courier. The Foundation came as a natural evolution of the good things FAN Courier was already doing, and each time it starts a new project with new partners, it is certain that things will be carried through to the end, and the lives of people in the target communities will be better and more peaceful.
