eMAG, the largest IT&C online store in Romania, has now a version for mobile phones.

“eMag Mobil opens a new segment on the market of online commerce being launched in a moment of accelerated growth of the mobile internet market in Romania,” says Radu Apostolescu, vice-president and development manager of eMAG.

eMAG Mobil is optimized for small screens, which allows users to look in the catalogue of products, place orders and administer the eMAG account.

“We are looking at the mobile version as an alternative to inform clients, at least at this point. We know that many of those who are faced with a decision to acquire a product in an offline store feel the need to compare the offer they have in front of them with similar ones before making a decision. This, they can do very well by using the phone they have in their pocket,” says Apostolescu.

The company expects mobile platforms to become an increasingly important channel for online commerce. Last year, the number of smartphones with internet access represented 10 percent of the total number of functional mobile phones. The expectations of telecom operators point to a 30 ratio this year.

eMAG was launched in Bucharest in 2001 and currently runs the IT&C website as well as 7 showrooms located in Bucharest, Iasi, Ploiesti, Cluj, Timisoara, Constanta and Craiova.

eMAG posted a turnover of EUR 102 million in 2010, which represented a 60 percent growth on the previous year. The online retailer estimates it will end 2011 with a turnover of EUR 150 million.

eMAG, together with Asesoft Distribution and Flanco, is part of the group of companies run by businessman Iulian Stanciu.
