In an official statement after the referendum, the Embassy of the United States of America urged for an unbiased decision of the Constitutional Court regarding the results of the referendum.
“We are aware of the Romanian Central Election Bureau’s announcement of the results of Sunday’s referendum which now must be certified by the Constitutional Court. The court and the parliament established very clear rules last month as to how the referendum was to be conducted. The issue before the court now is whether these rules were complied with. The Court must be allowed to make a principled decision independently and without any outside interference. It is essential that the Romanian people have confidence that the referendum was free and fair and that these rules have been enforced,” goes the U.S. Embassy’s statement.
As Ambassador Mark Gitenstein (in picture) said on the 236th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, “In the end no economy can flourish and no democracy will survive unless there is unwavering commitment to the rule of law and respect for democratic institutions. No one can doubt now that Romania has courageous and relentless prosecutors and fearless judges. For them no one is above the law.”
