Labour minister Marius Budai said during Business Review’s Working Romania event on Tuesday that the government aims to maintain continuous dialogue with the business environment in order to improve legislation so as companies can have an easier time finding workforce, but also noted that businesses must “show more empathy” to their workers, which would lead to them being more productive.

“We’ve signed a memorandum with construction sector businesses and we’ve made the sector a priority for the next ten years, with measures like increasing the minimum wage – we’re making small, but certain steps towards a better situation in the construction sectors, both for business owners and employees,” the minister said.

Minister Budai added that although some of the measures recently taken by the government, such as part-time work regulations, were seen as problematic by some businesses, they did have a clear target: “The people who benefited the most from the part-time rules were pensioners who now have the opportunity to spend a few hours a day working and gaining additional income,” the minister explained.

He also noted that starting this year, vocational schools would be reinstated and there would be 70,000 available spots in these schools, of which 10,000 will be reserved for disabled persons. “Vocational schools will produce new workers in a few years, but the immediate measure that will make more workforce available will be apprenticeships – each trained apprentice will earn a wage starting at RON 2,250, which is not a small amount,” the minister said.
