Dr. Claudia Oanea, Managing Director at Siemens Healthineers Romania, will be a speaker in Panel 2 of Day 2 at the Environmental & Sustainability Summit 2023. The event, hosted at The Marmorosch Bucharest, Autograph Collection, will take place on October 4-5 and will approach crucial topics such as sustainable food and water consumption, eco-communities, renewable energy sources, and circular economy.

With medical training and 20 years of activity in the health field, both in the pharmaceutical and medical services sectors, Dr. Claudia Oanea has solid experience in strategic, operational, and organizational management, but also in due diligence processes, company acquisitions and their integration, joint venture processes, performance and change management.

She took over the management of Siemens Healthineers Romania in January 2022, previously holding management positions, both in business development and in operations and strategy in large companies in the healthcare field.

“The ESG practices are often indicative of a company’s long-term vision and responsible business practices. For Siemens Healthineers sustainability plays a crucial role and our company has implemented several initiatives in this respect, both in our operations and product offerings. Our mission is clear: We pioneer breakthroughs in healthcare. For everyone. In our commitment to sustainability, we have assumed a leading role in supporting innovation to enhance access to healthcare and facilitate more efficient care management.” Dr. Claudia Oanea told BR.

During the event, the panelist will dive into topics such as Sustainable Business and Financial Sustainability, with a focus on integrating sustainability into business processes, complying with European regulations, and the evolving landscape of sustainable business models.

The Managing Director of Siemens Healthineers Romania also sat down with Business Review for an exclusive interview to preview the talking points of the Environmental & Sustainability Summit:

Can you share specific initiatives or projects that your company has undertaken to reduce its environmental footprint and promote sustainability? How have these initiatives contributed to your overall sustainability goals and outcomes?

Sustainability is nowadays an important part of the companies’ strategies, in various industries, and the medical field is no exception. The ESG practices are often indicative of a company’s long-term vision and responsible business practices. For Siemens Healthineers sustainability plays a crucial role and our company has implemented several initiatives in this respect, both in our operations and product offerings.

Siemens Healthineers is responding to the urgent call from scientists for a decarbonized global economy by taking specific actions and pursuing a long-term climate strategy and goals.

Siemens Healthineers has defined CO2 reduction targets that are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Siemens Healthineers commits to achieving carbon neutrality by FY 2030 for its own operations. To help us reaching our CO2 reduction target, our cross-functional Combat Climate Change program is supported by our executive management. As a growing company, we see the need for decoupling business growth from negative climate impacts by deploying innovative and future-proof processes, products, services, and solutions, and by supporting the carbon-free energy transition.

Our aim is to reliably offer our customers— ultimately each individual patient around the world—systems, solutions, and services that can sustainably meet high demands while operating an efficient and resilient supply chain. The goal of our New Ambition phase, which we launched in FY 2022, is to contribute to the global fight against complex diseases and to enter new growth markets while remaining successful in our core markets. Our businesses and regions have developed strategies to help us achieve our New Ambition. These efforts are also supported by R&D activities in the areas of digitalization, Artificial Intelligence, and robotics.

Combining the strengths of people, data, and technology means that tasks can be completed more comfortably, more easily, more accurately, quicker, and potentially more safely. Our portfolio of remote-controlled devices supports the treatment of medical emergencies in remote and decentralized settings. Here, it aims to reduce waiting times for treating medical emergencies such as heart attacks and strokes, and to improve the overall cost-effectiveness of treatment.

We responsibly harness the power of digitalization, data, and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the quality of care for individuals and streamline efficiencies across all levels of the healthcare delivery system. We use AI to enable automation in clinical decision-making, but also to improve robotics and image-guided clinical procedures.

As of September 30, 2022, we had an overall number of 84 AI-supported products and solutions in our portfolio. As our data collection process evolves, we gained better transparency and adjusted our FY 2021 data accordingly. Our goal is to increase this number to 110 by FY 2025, and to 160 by FY 2030.

In what ways does your company integrate sustainability practices into its core business operations and corporate culture? How do you ensure that sustainability is not just a buzzword but a fundamental part of your organization’s identity and strategy?

Every two seconds, someone between 30- and 70-years old dies prematurely from noncommunicable diseases: cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes, or cancer. A considerable number of people live in precarious environments marked by health challenges, with severely restricted access to basic healthcare services and, therefore, healthcare systems worldwide face the need to better respond to such situations.

Our mission is clear: We pioneer breakthroughs in healthcare. For everyone. In our commitment to sustainability, we have assumed a leading role in supporting innovation to enhance access to healthcare and facilitate more efficient care management. To improve access to care, we utilize various resources and methods in order to face critical challenges, and this includes partnering with stakeholders, implementing new digital solutions across the health continuum, employing flexible financing and business models, developing devices with fewer infrastructure requirements.

In the same line with this vision, we are augmenting the availability of diagnostic tests we offer, and we are consistently expanding the deployment of systems from our Imaging and Advanced Therapies portfolio. We also provide specialized training programs to maintain exemplary service standards, and we are an active supporter of continuous education and training for specialists in the field. In Financial Year 2022, we reached 212 million patient touchpoints in underserved countries, and thus increased our 2020 figures by 22 %.

Collaboration and partnerships are often key drivers for achieving sustainability goals. Could you highlight any strategic collaborations your company has engaged in to address environmental and sustainability challenges? How have these partnerships enhanced your ability to make a positive impact on the environment and society?

As a leading company in the healthcare field, we are at the forefront of advancing personalized medicine and our efforts focus on enhancing precision and diagnostic accuracy. This implies minimizing unnecessary variations in healthcare practices, tailoring treatments to individual patients, and driving improved outcomes in therapy. In order to build an accurate tailored treatment, you need a highly specific diagnosis. And specific care such as Cardiovascular, Neurovascular, and Comprehensive Cancer Care are strategic priorities for us in terms of personalized treatment. Merging with the company Varian has propelled us to take a significant leap forward in the field of cancer care: we have incorporated patient-centric and automated solutions for adaptive radiotherapy that allow us to deliver treatments that adapt to the changing conditions of each patient. Siemens Healthineers actively promotes awareness of early diagnosis and disease prevention and offers dedicated solutions for both radiology and the laboratory. Furthermore,  the increased use of AI is enabling better preventive care screenings for various conditions including breast, prostate, and lung cancer.
