ESOL Examinations Centre (EEC), the first national centre where Cambridge ESOL exams can be taken, has opened today in Bucharest. This new centre will organize monthly exam sessions, for all the range of English certificates, depending on the level of candidates and their demands.

The first examination session in the EEC will be organized on January 14th 2012. Until now, candidates could take exams in the centers based at the British Council in Bucharest or in Pitesti city.

According to Oliver Gargiulo, director of EEC Romania, the level of exams sessions may increase to 100 per year, and additional testing sessions can be organized across Romania, where a group of at least 40 candidates will be formed. Gargiulo estimates that in the first year, the centre will have 1000 candidates, and their number is expected to reach 15.000 in the following years.

Dionysia Iannou, development manager for Greece, Romania and Bulgaria, stated that Romania ranks 5th in the world, on the results obtained on CAE and FCE examinations. Only the northern countries and Germany rank better in this area.

Some certificates are offered for young learners (YLE), while more complex certificates are offered for niche industries. For instance, candidates that are active in the accounting or legal business can opt for the International Certificate in Financial English (ICFE) or the International Legal English Certificate (ILEC). At present, the most accessed testing level by Romanian candidates is the Certificate of Advanced English (CAE).

Oliver Gargiulo adds that companies in Romania invest in English language training for employees, but that the evaluations are simple formalities and don’t asses the real level of the candidates. Hence, an evaluation that respects international procedures is more relevant for the employer.

Cambridge ESOL offer a leading range of certificates for learners and teachers of English
that are taken by over 3 million people in over 2500 centers, across 130 countries.

The exam locations are the EEC headquarter in Popesti Leordeni, Ilfov County, and the Rin Grand Hotel in Bucharest.
