Saturday, July 20, commencing at 10 AM, a solemn military and religious ceremony will be held at the Air Heroes Monument, featuring the laying of wreaths in honor of fallen aviators. This ceremony will pay tribute to soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in various theaters of operations, including Althea (Bosnia, 2005), KAIA (Afghanistan, 2006 and 2011-2012), and Baltica 07 (Baltic States, 2007).

Following the ceremony, an impressive air show featuring dozens of military aircraft from the Romanian Air Force will take place. Helicopters from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Romanian Intelligence Service, and the Romanian Aeroclub will also participate. Spectators will have the opportunity to witness an array of military aircraft, including the F-16 Fighting Falcon, C-130 Hercules, C-27J Spartan, IAR-330, and IAR-99, along with EC-135 SMURD and S-70M BlackHawk helicopters. The show will also feature a Learjet 75 from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, SA-365 Dauphin helicopters from the Romanian Intelligence Service, a C-17 aircraft from PAPA, Extra 300 aircraft from the Romanian Aeroclub, and F-18 Hornet aircraft from the Finnish Air Force.

Romanian Aviation and Air Force Day is celebrated annually on July 20th

The origins of Romanian military aviation date back to 1910, when the first military aircraft, designed by Aurel Vlaicu and built by the Army Arsenal, took flight on June 17, 1910, as documented in the “Calendar of Military Traditions” (2010). By 1911, the first officers were certified as pilots, and in 1912, the first flight school was established. The first law governing aeronautics was enacted in 1913, according to www.roaf.ro.

The Air Force has undergone extensive reorganization, leading to the establishment of the General Staff of Aviation and Air Defense in 1993, which was reconstituted as the General Staff of the Air Force in 2000. This body is responsible for coordinating the defense of Romania’s airspace.

Following Romania’s accession to the “Partnership for Peace” in 1994, a pivotal step towards integration into Euro-Atlantic structures, the combat capabilities of the Romanian Air Force have been significantly enhanced through various modernization programs.

Since 2005, the Romanian Air Force has actively participated in numerous international missions, including Althea (Bosnia, 2005), KAIA (Afghanistan, 2006 and 2011-2012), and Baltica 07 (Baltic States, 2007), as reported by www.roaf.ro.
