The direct contribution of telecom companies to the Romanian economy totaled in excess of RON 7 billion (approximately EUR 1.6 billion) while the number of jobs directly created by these companies totaled 6,712, according to a KPMG report presented by Mihai Rada, director for technology, media and telecommunications in the company.

The cumulated turnover of the telecom players in Romania- Orange Romania, Vodafone Romania, Cosmote Romania, Telemobil (taken over by Cosmote) and RCS&RDS- represents 3 percent of Romania’s GDP last year.

Telecom operators paid RON 374 million (EUR nearly EUR 86 million) to employees, which consisted in salaries, bonuses. Moreover, RON 4.2 billion (approximately EUR 964 million) went from telecom companies to services ensured by other enterprises while another RON 2.1 billion (approximately EUR 482 million) was the contribution to the state budget in 2011, consisting of taxes (including spectrum taxes).

At the end of last year, the ARPU on the Romanian market was EUR 6.9. By comparison, in the Czech Republic the ARPU was EUR 18 while in the UK it totaled EUR 47. “This is how must we must catch up to other countries in Western Europe, while investments in infrastructure are comparable. It is how one of the telecom executives in Romania said some time ago- Romanians want premium quality at minimum prices,” said Rada.
