Almost 66 percent of Romanians have lost their contacts, essential information or pictures at least once, according to data collected in an online questionnaire by Huawei Romania.

More than half (61 percent) of the loss of information was caused by phone losses or device malfunctions. On the other hand, the most unlikely way this information is lost is thorugh the phone being infected with a virus (4 percent). Even so, half of those who responded to the questionnaire say they have installed an antivirus/mobile security software on their phones.

41 percent of those who filled out Huawei Romania’s questionnaire said that they have lost or got their phone stolen at least once in their life, losing temporary or permanent access to their personal data. The survey shows that young people under the age of 25 (generation Z) are almost twice as likely (30.74 percent) to lose their phones compared to those over 35 (18.71 percent) (generation X).

However, the survey reveals that many Romanians have learned from the unpleasant experiences they have had and have started to better protect their personal information. 73.68 percent of those surveyed said they were backing up the photos, contacts, and data on their phones.

3 out of 5 young people (80.94 percent) said they frequently backed up, compared with 66.32 percent in the X generation. The study also shows that owners of flagship devices (over RON 3,000) were more interested in doing backups (85.31 percent), compared to those who have phones costing less than RON 1.000 lei (62.42 percent). The generation that most appreciates flagship devices is millennials – 12.26 percent of them have a flagship, compared to 7 percent on average in the X and Z generations.

When it comes to securing their phones, three-quarters (75 percent) of Romanians choose to limit the access of strangers to their phones, with fingerprinting being the most popular option (54 percent).

The rest of the security methods used vary according to the age of the owner: Generation X prefers passwords (13.15 percent), Z generation likes 4-digit pins (9.92 percent), while millennials (26-34 years) choose to unlock their phones with facial recognition (8.28 percent).

The poll shows that 66 percent of Romanians are use their personal phone for business purposes. Of these, a quarter (24.09 percent) do not use any means of limiting unauthorized access to their phones, so in the event of a theft or loss, the device may become a security risk for the company where they work.

The questionnaire conducted online by Huawei Romania, on November 14-23, was filled out by 12,381 active people on social networks, possessing different brands of phones.

Huawei launched a new flagship this fall – the Huawei Mate 20 Pro – equipped with an integrated fingerprint sensor and 3D Face Unlock with Artificial Intelligence that unlocks the phone through 3D analysis technology in less than 0.6 seconds.
