Iulius Mall, part of Iulius Town Timișoara, the largest mixed-use urban regeneration complex in the west of Romania, was awarded the LEED® GOLD certification by the US Green Building Council. IULIUS Company owns the only nationwide network of LEED® certified shopping malls in Romania, all its projects being focused on lining up with international sustainability standards.

The sustainability certification of the entire operating portfolio of IULIUS Company, including the projects under development, is a part of the sustainability strategy of IULIUS Group, focused on approaching three main pillars – environment, investments in people, and community – with an emphasis on corporate governance and business ethics best practices.

With 105,000 sqm GLA, Iulius Mall Timișoara has the largest shopping area outside the Capital, following its integration in the Iulius Town mixed-use complex back in 2019. Thus, a formerly industrial area was revived as a Western lifestyle center via a total investment upwards of € 442 million.

The US Green Building Council awarded Iulius Mall its LEED® Gold certification, after having previously been LEED® Silver certified in 2014. The certification process is an ongoing commitment made to reducing the carbon footprint of Iulius Mall. The certification achieved this year marks the progress Iulius Mall made owing to its attention to the sustainable management of green spaces, outdoor spaces and waste, improvement in energy efficiency, reduction in water consumption, and provision of an enhanced level of indoor air quality.

“We are delighted that the investments and policies implemented by Iulius Mall helped the company to evolve in terms of ‘green buildings’ and to register major performances in its sustainability indicators. This result is also the best recognition that our projects contribute to creating more sustainable communities and are concrete steps towards a healthier and more people-friendly environment,” said Dan Adrian Chelaru, Group Sustainability Officer of IULIUS Company.

“The LEED® Gold certification achieved by Iulius Mall confirms that the company lined up with international sustainable operation and maintenance practices. We are glad to have been a part of this process, whereby Iulius Mall proved that a dedicated team and investments for a sustainable future generate immediate impacts in terms of energy efficiency, water consumption optimization, environmental protection through sustainable waste management and implementation of green procurement and cleaning policies,” said Roxana Isopescu, LEED AP O+M, Senior Sustainability Consultant, Green and Healthy Buildings Certifications Division, Colliers.

In addition to meeting the highest modern technical requirements, the implemented solutions, comfort and safety, given its location in the Iulius Town complex, Iulius Mall also has 600 bike parking spaces, electric vehicle charging stations, excellent access to public transport to reduce pollution and minimize reliance on personal vehicles, as well as access to a park of about 5 hectares.
