What to do this weekend in Bucharest – May 5-8

This weekend, though under the menace of seemingly never-ending dark clouds and some traffic restrictions, has gathered some delightful events directed at the senses.

Spotlight Festival – May 5-8

From 20:30 up until 23:00 during festival days, participants are invited to walk alongside Calea Victoriei Avenue, between BCU (Central University Library) and Splaiul Independentei and discover art installations, architectural lighting and video mapping projections, created by Romanian and international artists.

The European Film Festival – May 5-29

More than 80 films will screen in the 20th edition of the festival organized by the Romanian Cultural Institute. Projections will happen across six Romanian cities: Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Baia Mare, Timisoara, Targu Mures and Hunedoara. In Bucharest screenings take place in several cinemas.

A ticket for one entrance costs RON 10, while a subscription for 6 entries costs RON 48.

Art Safari Bucharest – May 5-15

Promising to bring the public the artworks of over 800 artists from the 20th and 21st centuries, the festival will have a main exhibit dedicated to the Dada movement, but will include works from more than 50 other galleries. Moreover, the program will also include conferences held by renowned international specialists.

A one-day ticket to Art Safari costs RON 50 for adults and RON 30 for children aged under 12, students and pensioners. A five-day subscription is RON 120 and a ten-day subscription is RON 240.

Unfinished: The Beginning – May 5-19

A visual arts festival bringing multimedia journalism together with video installations, film, virtual reality and educational events. Taking over the central area of Bucharest (University Square – Bucharest Dome, National Theatre Bucharest, ARCUB Gabroveni), the festival includes the World Press Photo Expo 2016 as one of its main pillars – but also expands into art, storytelling and digital evolution by partnering with major artists, institutions and content creators across the globe.

Open for visiting daily between 11:00 and 21:00, the entrance fee is RON 10.

And if festivals are maybe too crowded for your taste, you can enjoy the free entrance offered on May 8 by the National History Museum of Romania, which is celebrating 44 years of existence.

This weekend will also bring some traffic restrictions due to various events.

Unirii Boulevard, between I.C. Bratianu and Libertatii Boulevards, will be closed from Friday afternoon until Saturday at 1:00 for organizing a car parade.

On Saturday, between 11:00 and 13:00, Victoriei Square will be closed off for an announced protest of the postal workers union. The area between Aviatorilor Boulevard – Soseaua Kiseleff – Iancu de Hunedoara Boulevard will be restricted during this time.

On Sunday, the Veterans’ Cross will bring the restriction of several central areas of Bucharest between 10:30 and 14:00. The itinerary includes Herastrau Park – Soseaua Kiseleff – Triumph Arch – Victoriei Square (without the local traffic being affected) – Aviatorilor Boulevard (sidewalk) – C-tin Prezan Boulevard– Soseaua Kiseleff – Herastrau Park.

If the city offer is not so appealing and you feel like getting away this weekend, make a pit-stop in Comana, to discover the Village of Crafts, opening for visitation on Saturday.
