The best laptop on the market is one the things that everybody looks when buying a new PC or a Mac. Engadget.com makes a top of this kind every year, based on Tom’s Guide, one of the best reviewers and testers in the world. And for 2018 the brand on top is Lenovo, the Chinese manufacturer that manages to keep the position for the second year.

The rating is based on the support offered, design, innovation, value/selection and product quality. It doesn’t matter if the computer you buy is a EUR 200 Chromebook or a EUR 1,500 gaming rig these qualities must be taken into consideration and usually the brand matters.

Lenovo manages to keep the first position this year with a rate of 86 of 100 points. On reviews it made 38 out of 40 points, on design 13/15, on support & warranty 14/20, on value & selection 14/15 and on innovation 7/10. ThinkPad X1 Carbon was the perfect model, with 5 star review in the last year, but 53 percent of the company’s laptops scored 4 stars or higher.

HP is very close to the number one with 85/100 points, made from 35/40 on reviews, 14/15 on design, 15/20 on support & warranty, 7/10 on innovation and 14/15 on value & selection. The American producer jumped two places from last year after lining up models HP Spectre x360, ZBook 17 or HP Envy 13. The manufacturer did manage to change the design for all models and the new one are looking great.

In the third place is Dell with 82/100 points. With 31/40 on reviews, 11/15 on design, 18/20 on support & warranty, 9/10 on innovation and 13/15 on value & selection. After Michael Dell got the share control back and unlisted the company from the stock exchange, the company managed to bring faster new models and innovate even better but also to offer better support. And still have mainstream laptops like XPS 13 and Alienware 15.

Acer gets fourth place with a score of 81/100 points. The Taiwanese manufacturer is known for good prices and good quality and it keeps providing with models like Spin 1 or Aspire E 15. The company also makes bold premium products like Predator 21X that has a price tag of EUR 10,000.

The same points are for Asus, the other Taiwanese producer, which shares the fourth place after getting 81/100. But while Acer went up one place this year, Asus went down two places. Asus is still the leader in gaming, with new systems like Zephyrus. And is also the leader in design and value.

The sixth place is where we find Microsoft, with 77/100. The line of Surface laptops and Surface Book 2 pushed the company four places up this year, even if the producer of the most used operating system in the world only has a handful of models on the market.

It may come as a surprise for the fans, but Apple is only on seventh place, with 72/100, falling two places this year. The strong point for the producer is the tech support, but there is no innovation or new design in the last year. If you’ve ever wanted a larger screen laptop but don’t have the money to pay for it, you may want to consider upgrading.

Razer, the premium gaming laptop manufacturer is on eighth place with 70/100. So, if you are looking for a really good gaming laptop and you have a generous budget you can go for Razer Blade or Razer Blade Pro. The ‘premium’ stands for quality but also for prices.

Another Taiwanese is in a tie for the nineth place, with 67/100, the same as Samsung. While MSI manages to make good laptops, including for gaming, has a very weak tech support. On the other side Samsung it looks like it doesn’t care anymore about laptops, even if in the past had very good products.
