Steve Jobs, the Apple co-founder and chairman, died yesterday at age 56. “Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor,” Apple’s CEO Tim Cook wrote in a letter to the company’s employees. Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple in August of this year after a 14-year performance in which he brought the company back from brink and turned into the world’s most valuable company, with a market value of USD 350 billion.

Jobs is know as the visionary behind Apple’s many successful products such as the MacBook, the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad. The ecosystem created around the iPod and the iTunes library is credited for radically changing the music industry and the way music is retailed. He also founded animation company Pixar, which he sold to Disney in 2006.

He is survived by his wife Laurene, and four children.
