The Romanian-Moldo-German Cultural Center “Dumitru Dorin Prunariu” in Nuremberg, Germany, has achieved two Guinness World Records for the longest and heaviest traditional Romanian waist belt. Handmade over three months, the belt measures 1,667.41 meters and weighs 70 kilograms.
The Guinness World Records commission measured the belt at Nuremberg’s Jakobsplatz.
“Romanians from all over the world made history in Nuremberg! We entered the record book twice: first, for the longest Romanian traditional waist belt at 1,667.41 meters, and second, for the heaviest traditional waist belt weighing 70 kilograms. We thank everyone who participated, especially Valentina Banu and Daniela Lostun, and the hundreds of people who patiently stood with us during the more than three-hour measurement,” wrote Ionela van Rees-Zota, coordinator of the Dacia e.V. Association and the Romanian-Moldo-German Cultural Center, on Facebook.
The project began on February 24, 2024, during Dragobete, when the Romanian-Moldo-German Cultural Center invited Romanians worldwide to sew, weave, and handcraft a traditional waist belt of at least one meter to be sent to Nuremberg by June 23, a day before the Universal Day of the Romanian Blouse.
“Organizations from various countries, from New Zealand to the Republic of Moldova, participated, with over 1,000 people contributing. Romanian quilting bees from around the world and Romania brought together hundreds of people. Some associations sent 40 meters. Two records were set: the longest Romanian traditional waist belt handmade by Romanians globally, and the heaviest, as it was weighed,” Ionela van Rees-Zota told AGERPRES.
Contributors chose their favorite belt models, with requirements being a width of 7-8 centimeters and a length of at least 1.5 meters.
The Guinness World Records initiative was organized by the Romanian-Moldo-German Cultural Centre “Dumitru Dorin Prunariu” in Nuremberg, Valentina Banu of EU-RO Connect Consulting, Daniela Lostun, and the Romanian Quilting Bee Nuremberg.
