VELUX Romania, one of the leading manufacturers of roof top windows, conducted a nationwide survey among homeowners this year to probe the reasons and constraints for energy-efficient home renovations. According to the survey, carried out on a sample of over 1000 people nationwide, 69% of respondents said that the main obstacle preventing them from renovating their home was financial constraints, while 79% said they would renovate their homes if they could access subsidized funds from the authorities.

The VELUX survey, conducted on a sample of 1,008 people, shows that 64% of Romanians are considering renovating their home, the main reasons being to improve aesthetics and functionality, 59% and 38% respectively, followed by cost savings, 36%. Also, decorating the house – 40%, improving insulation – 32% and renovating the kitchen – 23%, are the main changes respondents want, with 45% of them saying that the last renovation of their home was more than 3 years ago.

According to the VELUX Romania survey, the biggest obstacles preventing Romanians from starting a renovation project are 69% – financial constraints, 36% – possible cost overruns (hidden prices) and 25% – lack of professionals, with 84% of respondents also very concerned about the extra costs and 72% about the extra time they must spend on modernization.

As for why they would turn to national subsidy programs, 78% of Romanians indicated that they would like to make their home more comfortable, while 43% want to create a healthier environment and 35% want to lower utility prices. Moreover, 98% of respondents consider energy efficiency as important when starting a modernization project.

At the same time, 1 out of 3 Romanians consider the attic as a solution to make space more efficient, according to the VELUX Romania survey, but budgetary constraints – 34% and concerns related to structural changes – 16%, are the main reasons that prevent them from moving forward with the project.

On the other hand, although 79% of Romanians believe that government subsidies would significantly increase their desire to renovate their home, 79% are also very concerned about the possible difficulties that will arise in the process of obtaining them. However, 76% of respondents believe that possible free professional advice or consultancy would encourage them to start a renovation project, even if there are obstacles in the process.

“At VELUX Romania, we strongly believe in the importance of supporting efforts for energy efficient homes.
