The Romanian Post will lay off approximately 600 employees by the end of March and will also axe the number of post offices by 135, according to an agreement between the government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), says Mediafax newswire.

Thus, by the end of March, 600 jobs must be cut.

Also, 135 postal offices will be dissolved by the end of April. Following these measures, the number of Romanian Post offices will decrease to 5,700 units

However, Romanian authorities obtained a two-month extension of the term in which they must find an investor who is willing to take over at least 20 percent of the shares in the Romanian Post, having now until the end of June.

The Romanian Post is currently controlled by the Ministry of Communications (75 percent of shares) and the Proprietatea Fund (25 percent).
