Romanian farmers to receive EUR 200 per hectare starting 2018 says Dacian Ciolos

Romanian farmers could receive around EUR 200 per hectare as direct payments from the EU starting 2018 said Dacian Ciolos, the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development in a press conference earlier this week. The present level of the subsidy is about EUR 100 per hectare and it will reach approximately EUR 135 in 2013.

About seven member states will benefit from increased direct payments. The commissioner’s proposal to balance the level of direct payments between the 27 member states is part of the draft reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the period after 2013 which was presented last week in Brussels.

Overall, direct payments for local farmers will grow by about EUR 3 billion until 2020, but they will receive EUR 200 per hectare – which is the maximum level – starting 2018. The commissioner also explained that there are presently member states that receive lower per hectare payments than Romania, nominating the Baltic States.

The commissioner’s proposal to balance direct payments between member states will also mean that there will be states that will receive less than they presently do. Ciolos stressed that this redistribution process also has a political dimension especially considering that the decision regarding the new CAP will be taken simultaneously with the decision regarding EU’s budget for 2014 – 2020.
