The Peace Corps will end its Romanian program in 2013, US Ambassador to Bucharest Mark Gitenstein told Romanian Foreign Affairs Minister Teodor Baconschi today. In July 2013 the last group of volunteers within the program will cease its local activity.
The announcement comes as the Peace Corps celebrates 50 years of activity worldwide and 20 years of presence in Romania. In its 20 years of local presence, the program has created over 1,000 successful partnerships between US volunteers and various Romanian organizations.
The Peace Corps was established at the initiative of US president John F. Kennedy in 1961 to promote world peace. So far, over 200,000 US citizens have worked for the organization. Today, 9,000 volunteers are working in local communities in 77 host countries worldwide.
