The overall investment of Orange Romania (France Telecom group), Vodafone Romania and OTE (which runs Romtelecom, Cosmote and Germanos) since the companies started to run their activities on the local market totaled approximately EUR 7.7 billion.

Orange Romania, the leader of the local telecom market in terms of sales and customers, has invested more than EUR 2 billion in Romania. “There are 2,500 employees working in Orange and we are now exporting Romanian know-how as 300 of our employees from Cluj, Timisoara and Bucharest are working for other Orange branches abroad. We invested last year EUR 1 million in the training of our people. We estimate that indirectly, we helped create 6,000 jobs in Romania. Orange has paid last year taxes of RON 800 million,” said Jean Francois- Fallacher, CEO of Orange Romania.

Vodafone Romania, the first runner-up on the local telecom market, has invested EUR 2.7 billion in Romania since it started running operations here. “At Vodafone, we employ 4,000 people directly and we have contracts with more than 1,000 suppliers,” said Inaki Berroeta, CEO Vodafone Romania.

Cosmote Romania, third largest player on the mobile telephony market, has 2,400 employees. “If we also include Romtelecom, we offer employment to around 10,000 people. The investment placed in Romania by OTE so far amounted to EUR 3 billion,” said Stefanos Theocharopoulos, CEO of Cosmote and GM of Romtelecom. “The profit margins we are making in Romania are much lower compared to other countries in the world. With very slim margins, we need a certain time to obtain return on investment. Mobile telephony requires a very high investment upfront,” he said.
