Approximately 50 percent of online payments by card performed this year in Romanian online stores were made by Bucharest shoppers, according to payment platform Netopia mobilPay. Cluj and Timisoara inhabitants follow, taking up 4.5 percent each of the total online payments. Brasov is next with 4 percent of total payments, after which come Iasi, with 3.2 percent and Constanta with 3 percent.
“The data show a natural trend. Inhabitants in the capital are more exposed to the online growth, both informational and relative to the number of online stores offering fast delivery in Bucharest, obviously many more than throughout the rest of the country,” explained Antonio Eram, CEO and founder of Netopia mobilPay.
The Netopia data show that most Romanians make online purchases during the week, while at their workplace, between 9 and 17.00. They spend on average two times more than they do when placing the orders from home.
Most purchases were of tourism services, followed by telecom, IT, fashion and insurance.
In 2013 Netopia processed 2.2 million card transactions, worth EUR 76 million, representing a third of all card payments in Romania.
