Belgian retailer Mega Image has opened a supermarket inside the Dragonul Rosu (Red Dragon) shopping center in Fundeni, near Bucharest. The company intends to reach a network of 105 supermarkets by yearend, 35 of which will have been opened in 2011.
The Competition Council has approved earlier this week the takeover of the G’market stores by Mega Image. Following this decision, the Belgian retailer will be able to turn the three existing G’market stores into Mega Image supermarkets. Two other G’market stores which are located in Iasi have been bought earlier this year by Carrefour.
Turkish G’market entered the local market in 1998. The retailer reported sales of EUR 60 million in 2007 but following the next year the business entered a downward trend and G’market started closing stores.
