Karcher Romania, as a specialist in cleaning, finalized the cleaning project of the Sfantul Gheorghe Square in Timisoara. This event marks an important milestone in the company’s mission to preserve historic monuments and buildings, as well as the rich history of this iconic market. The project, carried out in partnership with Timisoara City Hall, cost 10,000 euros plus tens of hours of work by Karcher employees and collaborators.

Cooperation for the preservation of the cultural values of the world

Sfantul Gheorghe Square in Timisoara represents a corner of history that dates back to 1323, when the existence of Saint George’s Church in this place was attested for the first time. With roots deeply embedded in local culture and tradition, the market has become a point of reference for the Timisoara community. Now, in Sfantul Gheorghe Square you can admire the statue of Saint George and the ruins of the old church, both testimonies of its rich history. With the passage of time, they suffered deterioration, and to restore the shine of this emblematic place, Karcher Romania started an extensive cleaning project. The Karcher team cleaned the pavement, the stairs and the surrounding concrete walls, contributing to the revitalization and preservation of this corner of cultural heritage. This activity undertaken by Karcher is a tribute to the history and cultural values that define this wonderful community.

During the press conference for the inauguration of the Sfantul Gheorghe Square cleaning project, the mayor of Timisoara, Dominic Fritz, said: “The Year of the Cultural Capital creates bridges of collaboration, and this openness of the private environment towards Timisoara is an important proof of trust in our vision and in the European Capital of Culture program. We are honored to have Karcher as a partner in this project to clean Sfantul Gheorghe Square, which is one of the old squares of Timisoara. This partnership illustrates the importance of our shared responsibility in preserving the historical heritage, and the results will be enjoyed by both the people of Timisoara and the tourists.”

“This restoration and cleanup project is a component of our social responsibility commitment. We engage in cultural projects that bring value to communities and promote sustainable development. We are proud to have been able to bring this expertise to Timisoara, a city with a special meaning for all of us. Timisoara is known not only for its rich history, but also for being the European Capital of Culture this year. We are glad to be able to help preserve the beauty of this city at such a significant time. We believe that this project will bring benefits to the community, by revitalizing and preserving the monuments, thus participating in the preservation of the local cultural heritage“, says Monica Iavorschi, CEO of Karcher Romania.

Advanced technology and expertise

The Karcher Romania team brought back the original shine of Sfantul Gheorghe Square using the most modern cleaning technologies. The process included testing cleaning equipment and technologies for each element of the market, and the final list of Karcher equipment used in this project was determined from this evaluation.

Dry ice cleaning technology was used to remove surface deposits from the square statue, ensuring a gentle cleaning. For alveolar travertine, professional vacuuming and steam cleaning technology was used to extract the dirt. In sensitive areas of the plinth and in areas with material bonding, the use of the steam cleaning vacuum was preferred to avoid damage to the lithic material. The statue was then washed with low pressure water to protect the patina of the bronze, using a professional Karcher high pressure cleaner.

These technologies have also been extended to the cleaning of andesite slab access steps, graffitied reinforced concrete sidewalls, and ceramic and andesite tile paving. All these operations were carried out carefully by Karcher specialists, using delicate techniques to preserve the integrity of the monument.

The Karcher mission

Karcher is dedicated to the preservation and revitalization of cultural and historical heritage around the world, and with this project in Timisoara, it continues a long tradition of involvement in the preservation of historical monuments and buildings, alongside partners such as local authorities and specialists in restoration and conservation.
