Food security is not a past problem and it will continue to be an issue in the future said Dacian Ciolos, the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development on Friday during the Mediafax Talks about Agriculture Conference in Bucharest.
“If we look at what is happening internationally, the cause of social unrest, political turmoil, can also be related to the fear of not having the capacity to ensure food security as long as demand goes up and productivity has remained flat for some years”, said Ciolos.
The commissioner also pointed out that the number of farmers in the European Union has decreased in the past years. Farmers represent only about 3-4 percent of the total European active population, according to data presented by Ciolos.
Referring to the draft reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the period after 2013 which was presented this week in Brussels, Ciolos stressed that one of the priorities is to ensure food security in the EU.
