The demand for mobile phones surged last year in Europe, mainly because of the growing popularity of smartphones, says GfK.
Last year 3.2 percent more mobile phones were sold than in 2010, while smartphone sales hiked by 67 percent.
Last year, European consumers bought 258 million mobile phones.
While in 2010 smartphones represented only 2 percent of sales of mobile phones, last year their weight in the total market surged to 36 percent. In December 2011, this ratio went up to 45 percent.
Retailers in the 25 countries monitored in Europe posted two digit sales which varied between 35 percent in Great Britain and 105 percent in Kazahstan, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine.
Great Britain is the largest market for smartphones in Europe, followed by Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
