Prométhée, a bronze work by Romanian artist Constantin Brancusi, sold for more than USD 12.6 million at New York during a bidding organized by Sotheby’s.

The starting price was USD 4.75 million, but went up to USD 10 million within minutes, soon surpassing the initial expectations of organizers who estimated the price of the work would be between USD 6 million and USD 8 million.

The work is part of a limited edition of 4 bronze heads which were molded in 1911, and comes from a private collection in Europe.

Another work by Brancusi called Quenouille, dating from 1923, will go under the hammer today, having an estimated price between USD 80,000 and USD 120,000.

The Sotheby’s bidding also set the record for the highest sum paid for a work of art in a bidding, with USD 119.9 million going for The Scream by Edvard Munch.
