Apple is reportedly developing its own screens for the first time, using a manufacturing facility near its headquarters in California, Bloomberg reports. Initially, the company is making small numbers of the screens for testing purposes.
According to Bloomberg, the move is but the latest example of Apple bringing the design of its key components in house. Apple is reportedly making a major investment in the development of next-generation MicroLED screens. Compared to the current OLED displays, the new screens use different light-emitting compounds. These features could make future gadgets slimmer, brighter and could use less energy.
Apple’s new screens are reportedly not as easy to produce as the OLED displays and the tech giant has already made several attempts at creating them.
The end consumers will have to wait a few before using a device featuring Apple’s new screens. However, the move by the tech giant is already expected to have an impact on the businesses of major screen makers, such as Samsung.
