A list of over 187,000 individuals having debts to the state budget of over RON 1,500 was published on the open government page data.gov.ro. These individuals have a total debt of RON 3.4 billion (EUR 757.7 million), of which ANAF stated can recover RON 2.3 billion.

The legal situation of the remaining debt of RON 1.1 billion (insolvency without revenues or traceable assets, injunctions of enforcement and so) stops ANAF from initiating or continuing enforcement measures,” the statement reads.

Among the names listed, Robert Negoita is at the top with a debt of RON 232 million. Former King Michael I of Romania has a debt of RON 4.1 million, according to hotnews.ro. Businessman Theodor Berna is also on the list with RON 7.9 million. George Becali has debts amounting to RON 3.9 million (which he contests), the same as Silviu Prigoana.

The Royal House of Romania said the debt was challenged in court.

Other names include Daniel Guzu (RON 2 million), Cristian Tantareanu (RON 2.7 million), Marian Vanghelie (RON 87,559), Eugen Teodorovici (RON 73,000), Elena Udrea (RON 29,082), Elena Basescu (RON 24,393), Catalin Predoiu (RON 24,393) and Daciana Sarbu, Victor Ponta’s wife (RON 12,603).

Both ex-MEP Elena Basescu and liberal Catalin Predoiu, whose running for mayor of Bucharest, said they paid all their taxes and that ANAF’s list was wrong.

Ombudsman Victor Ciorbea registers a debt of RON 201,765, while his wife Lacrima Ciorbea also had arrears amounting to RON 370,714.
