On May 31, just before everyone in Romania went on holiday courtesy of Children’s Day and Pentecost celebrations, Electric Castle launched a unique campaign to attract tourists from Barcelona, www.TouristsGo.ro.

Electric Castle, the music festival located in the commune of Bonțida, near Cluj-Napoca, presents itself as an alternative to over-tourism and the crowds of tourists in Barcelona and other major cities in Europe.

Electric Castle has launched TouristsGo.Ro, an initiative through which tourists currently overwhelming the streets of the metropolis can discover equally interesting alternatives just a 3-hour flight away.

“Tourists Go Home”, “Dear Tourists, Please Leave”, “Tourism Kills the City” are just a few of the messages with which a tourist is greeted on any street in Barcelona. The organizers of Electric Castle are transforming the negative connotation by adding www. at the beginning and .ro at the end of each message. This way, they become web domains redirected to www.TouristsGo.Ro, which presents alternative destinations, either directly to the festival itself or to Cluj, the Apuseni Mountains, or other areas in Transylvania.

Hundreds of such graffiti messages from Barcelona have been adapted in recent days. The initiative has caught the attention of locals, and over 50 partner locations (restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels) have joined the campaign by displaying the festival’s proposed messages (video). Moreover, on www.touristsgo.ro , locals can find suggestions for actions through which they can get involved in the campaign.

“Electric Castle, along with other major festivals in the country, has demonstrated in recent years that it is a very important source of foreign tourists for Romania,” says Tudor Costinas, Head of Communications. “Touristsgo.ro is just another step we are taking in the effort to promote Romania as a viable alternative for those seeking quality events in unique destinations.”

Macklemore, The Chemical Brothers, Iggy Pop, George Ezra, Pendulum, Jamie xx, Peggy Gou, and over 300 other artists will be coming to Electric Castle 2023.

This year’s edition will take place between July 19-23 at Bontida Castle, near Cluj Napoca. Macklemore, The Chemical Brothers, Iggy Pop, George Ezra, Pendulum, Jamie xx, Peggy Gou, and over 300 other artists will be coming to Electric Castle 2023.

Macklemore is an underground spirit rapper, but an international superstar according to his sales and awards record (including four Grammy Awards for his debut album). He is the first rap artist to headline at an edition of Electric Castle.

Macklemore has managed to remain memorable since his debut single “Thrift Shop,” which became his first No. 1 hit in the US, and he has consistently returned to the charts with new hits like “Heroes” or “Same Love.” For his first concert in Romania, the rapper is bringing a freshly released album and a show that compensates for his absence from the stage in recent years.

Jamie xx joins The Chemical Brothers and Peggy Gou in the headliners category of Electronic Music at Electric Castle. The artist behind The xx has focused on his solo career in recent years and is recognized as an expert in live improvisations enjoyed at the world’s biggest festivals.

Punk with Iggy Pop, post-rock with Sigur Rós, folk pop with George Ezra, and trip-hop with Morcheeba are going to be live on the Main Stage at Electric Castle.

After 10 years, Morcheeba returns to the castle, just as relevant and charismatic, with a setlist that includes hits like “The Sea” or “Part of the Process,” as well as material from their latest album, Blackest Blue, released last year.

It’s hard to believe that 30 years have passed since the release of “Chime”, Orbital’s biggest hit, but the British artists seem to be as in top form as they were at the beginning of their career. After recording dozens of songs, scoring four films, going through multiple separations and reconciliations, Orbital is returning to tour, much to the excitement of electro music fans.

In the list of must-see moments, opened by Rezz, Romy, and Noga Erez, we also have James Lavelle, the founder of the band UNKLE, who has already been present at the festival. Huey Morgan, former member of the Fun Lovin’ Criminals, who in recent years has become a prominent DJ at BBC Radio, the Berlin duo Booka Shade, and the Canadian artist Tiga. For those who want to explore a special musical area, Boy Harsher, the American darkwave band inspired by David Lynch’s films, along with Emma Ruth Rundle, one of the most talented singer-songwriters in the American underground scene, can be the highlights of EC9.

It promises to be a very interesting edition for rap and trap fans as well. The confirmation of Yung Lean in the line-up is complemented by the best Romanian artists in these music genres, including Ian, Oscar, Șatra BENZ, Specii, Bitză, Nane, Rava, MARKO GLASS X BVCOVIA, Lil Cagula, and Macanache. Complete information about lineup is available here.
