Moutai, the most valuable hard liquor in the world, is expanding to Romanian restaurants and hotels

Moutai, the most popular and appreciated distilled spirit in China, with a history of over 2 millennia, announces its expansion in Romania. The manufacturer present on our market since 2021, when they opened the first store, on Octavian Goga Boulevard, in Bucharest, is now expanding to Romanian restaurants and hotels, through the HoReCa distribution division.

Thus, Romanian restaurants can spoil their customers with products made by the most valuable hard liquor in the world, according to the report of the independent organization Brand Finance, which awarded Moutai every year, starting in 2016.

Moutai, China’s flagship product, is a sample of traditional culture, appreciated by the country’s diplomats and leaders

Moutai is what the Chinese call a “Baijiu”, meaning a white drink (“bai”, meaning “white”, and “jiu”, “drink”), with a history of over 2,000 years, produced exclusively from local ingredients. China’s representative distillate, as many consider it, is made from carefully selected red sorghum and wheat during certain phases of the moon. The production technique is a complex one, passed down from generation to generation. Each batch is fermented and distilled several times a year, and then the drink is stored for five years in ceramic vessels, allowing the alcohol to breathe and develop its flavors. After this period, the Moutai base distillates go through an elaborate blending process, where master blenders put together different productions to obtain the ideal combination, characterized by balanced and refined aromas of herbs, roasted hazelnuts, fruit and chocolate.

The drink resulting from this process is colorless and has an alcohol concentration of 53%, extremely well integrated into the taste of the product.

In China, Moutai is a country brand. Its importance dates back to the Chinese Civil War, when the drink was favored by the Red Army and future Chinese leaders, including Mao Zedong. Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Moutai has become a standard component of Chinese diplomatic meetings. Today, it is consumed both at formal events, such as high-level diplomatic or business meetings, but also during family moments.

In Romania, there is a wide range of Moutai products, the most famous being Moutai Flying Ferry, the flagship product, known as the original version of the distilled drink, and Moutai Prince, with a fresh aroma, often used in cocktails. In addition, limited editions of Moutai are also available on the market, such as Moutai Zodiac, which stands out for its creative packaging, inspired by the 12 zodiac signs of Western culture.

“Moutai is not only an exceptional drink, but an expression of Chinese identity and cultural tradition. That’s why, when we opened the store, we knew we had a relevant audience in the Chinese community in Romania and their circles of friends and business partners. We were, however, surprised and happy to discover that the local public is also open to knowing our products, culture and traditions. That’s why we are now expanding into the HoReCa area and aim for our products to reach as many consumers as possible, from the whole country”, said Cathy Cao, Moutai representative in Romania.

Gramont, the first fine dining restaurant where guests can enjoy Moutai products

One of the first restaurants to include Moutai on their menu is Gramont, within the Suter Palace Heritage Boutique Hotel. Here, guests can enjoy both the iconic Flying Fairy and Moutai Prince -based cocktails.

“At Gramont, we are proud to offer our customers the Moutai experience, taking them on a cultural and gustatory journey, strongly anchored in Chinese tradition. Some of the favorite pairings of those who cross our threshold are duck breast with cointreau, seasonal vegetables, Brussels sprouts, red cabbage puree and demiglace made with Moutai or the ROA cocktail, made with Moutai, Orgeat, orange liqueur and lime juice,” said Alexandru Stoian, Gramont operator.
