Romanian average salary up 4 pct in March on bonus payments

The average net salary in Romania was RON 1,617 (approximately EUR 370) this March, up 4.1 percent m-o-m, according to data released today by the National Institute of Statistics. There were reported salary increases in most industries mainly because of bonus payments offered by employers. These were either performance related bonuses or Easter bonus payments, according to the same source.

The highest salaries this March were reported in the tobacco industry where the average stood at RON 5,645 (approximately EUR 1.300). The industry reported an average 19.3 percent monthly salary increase this March, the largest reported across all sectors.

Employees working in hotels and restaurants, on the other hand, reported the lowest average salary this March at RON 860 (approximately EUR 198).

Despite overall salary increase, there were also reported salary cuts, the largest being in the mining sector (-4.8 percent m-o-m) and business auxiliary services related to the financial market including the insurance and pension funds sectors (-4.1 percent).

The average net salary grew by 4.8 this March y-o-y.
