Four Romanian students were on the International Chemistry Olympiad podium this July in Washington D.C., US, winning gold, silver and bronze medals.
Romania’s Chemistry Olympiad team consisted of Vlad Băcăuanu, a final year student at the IT High School in Bucharest, Maria Andreea Filip and Alexandru Paraschiv, both from Bucharest, and George Silvian Baltac from Calarasi. Băcăuanu was awarded the gold medal, after getting silver at the Chemistry Olympiad last year. Filip and Paraschiv brought home silver medals, while Baltac won a bronze medal.
For this edition, the International Chemistry Olympiad gathered 282 competitors from 78 countries. The competition consisted of two exams both theoretical and practical and the participants were ranked on individual scores. For this competition, the gold medals go to the top 12 percent of students, silver medals are awarded to the next 22 percent of students and bronze medals are awarded to the next 32 percent of students.
