Grocery retailer Profi opened this Thursday its first small-format for urban areas by rebranding five stores in Cluj-Napoca that it has recently acquired from Alimrom as Profi City.

“Tradesmen who wish to run their own business but do not have the money and all the right know-how to properly do so will get support from Profi that, in turn, for the success of the business, will benefit from their experience and commercial skills,” said Profi Rom Food general manager Pawel Musial.

The outlets’ total areas ranging between 180 and 316 sqm.

Unlike the standard Profi stores, the City units will feature fewer products but the offer will better adapted to the needs of proximity clients, says the retailer.

With these openings, Profi reaches a network 162 stores in 88 Romanian localities.

The retailer announced at the beginning of the year plans to open some 45 outlets in 2013 will require investments of about EUR 18 million.

In addition to its existing proximity format, Profi said it will launch two new smaller formats – Profi City which is adapted for large urban areas and Profi Loco which will be opened in rural areas.

Profi closed 2012 with a network of 149 stores, 45 of which were opened the same year.
