Mega Image to close its four supermarkets in Pitesti due to low sales

Following an evaluation of its establishment portfolio, Mega Image decided to close the four locations they have in Pitesti, according to a press release they distributed this morning. The stores will be closed during the following weeks.

An analysis of their annual strategy and their stores showed that the points in Pitesti are not yielding a high enough sales level to allow continuing of their commercial activity. Even more, investments made in advertising and logistics to open the four selling points did not have the expected outcome, as they added to losses already registered.

Xavier Piesvaux, Mega Image general director, said that the decision was made taking into account the results in Pitesti, which were below expected levels. Mega Image does not exculde the possibility of opening other supermarkets there in the future, if conditions become favorable.

This decision comes as an exception to the expansion plan Mega Image has, which includes opening new shops in Bucharest, Constanta, Brasov and other cities where they already have branches.

„Concentrating on investing in cities that already have an adequate performance level is the main argument behind our decision concerning Pitesti. However, this will not influence our expansion rythm into Romania’s retail market, which will maintain at the same level as the last years, according to our estimates,” Mihai Spulber, Mega Image operations director has declared.

Founded in 1995 and part of the Delhaize Group, Mega Image has a network of 420 supermarkets in Bucuresti, Constanta, Ploiesti, Brasov and other cities. Delhaize is an international retailer from Belgium and operates on three continents.
