In an exciting development for residents and park enthusiasts, Bucharest’s National Park is undergoing a significant transformation. Plans include the addition of a running track, a bicycle lane, a lakeside promenade, and even hammocks suspended above the water, promising to breathe new life into this beloved green space.

The National Park, along with the lake, is set to undergo an extensive process of rehabilitation and modernization. The primary goal is to enhance the comfort and safety of those living in the vicinity and those who frequent the park for leisure and recreation.

This ambitious project has recently received the green light from the Local Council for the proposed investments. Spread across a  10 acres area, the park, while not a historical monument, occupies a unique position between two protected zones: the Maior Coravu subdivision and the Vatra Luminoasă subdivision. As a result, there is a concerted effort to harmoniously integrate it into the local architectural landscape, adhering to the original vision set forth in 1953 when it was established.

The facelift of the National Park has been adopted by District 2 City Hall and it will involve the introduction of urban furniture elements – benches, sun loungers, bicycle racks, chess tables, wooden kiosks for fairs, electrically operated waste containers, etc.; playground equipment: swings, climbing equipment, trampoline; equipment for the dog park: dispenser, water fountain, obstacles, dog tunnel, etc.; lighting equipment: lighting poles, light strips, reflectors, spotlights, underwater spotlights; construction of asphalt pedestrian paths; as well as the arrangement of the lake’s shore with pontoons and boat mooring posts. The execution period of the investment project is twelve calendar months.

The Local Council also adopted a project related to the arrangement of the National Lake and its shores, with a value of approximately RON 23.5 million. For the lake, the works involve dismantling of buildings and green island areas; restoration of the green area – lakeside, by installing sod rolls, grassy plants, and supplementing the alignment vegetation with indigenous species resistant to urban environmental disturbance factors; setting up an irrigation system, pontoon arrangements, a stepped pontoon amphitheater, access platforms to the island, a retaining wall for the island, a lighting system, PVC hydrotechnical constructions, installation of suitable urban furniture, equipment for the arrangement of the lake’s shores; a floating nesting platform for birds.

Currently, the park is in an advanced state of deterioration. It has not undergone extensive modernization for more than 20 years.

The transformation is poised to rejuvenate the National Park, making it an even more appealing destination for outdoor enthusiasts, families, and individuals seeking leisure and relaxation. As these projects take shape, Bucharest’s National Park is set to emerge as an example of sustainable urban development and a testament to the community’s commitment to green and harmonious living.

Morever, a pumptrack area will be arranged for teenagers who enjoy exciting experiences, but also parkour equipment for children.

The project is part of a broader initiative of District 2, part of the European Commission’s “100 Green and Sustainable Cities” program.
