The George Enescu Philharmonic is celebrating the life of George Georgescu, one of the greatest Romanian conductors, with two extraordinary concerts held on October 4-5. Horia Andreescu will conduct Valentin Gheorghiu (soloist), Adela Zaharia (soprano), Carmen Topciu (mezzo soprano), Cristian Mogosanu (tenor) and Marius Bolos (bas). The event is being held in cooperation with the Romanian Cultural Institute.
George Georgescu was the moving force behind the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra for decades beginning shortly after World War I. Also, the conductor was a close associate of the famous George Enescu. During his career, he received honors from the French and communist Romanian governments.
In 1947, Georgescu was named director of the National Radio Orchestra of Romania with the intercession of his friend George Enescu. At this time, Georgescu also directed theIaşi”Moldova” Philharmonic Orchestra, and his international career began to revive with invitations to conduct in Prague and Kiev.
