Upstream, a division of Rompetrol Group has begun drilling operations for two exploration wells in the Satu Mare perimeter, covering 3000 sqm. Around USD 1.2 million have been spent for geological and geophysics analysis of the perimeter up to now, but the total investment is expected to reach USD 5 million.

“Significant deposits of oil and gas have been found after seismic and geological analysis. The finalizing of geological explorations through wells and data processing will come up in the first trimester of 2012, but we are confident that reports will confirm our estimates”, stated Gheorghe Georgescu, general director of Rompetrol.

The first exploration well will be drilled in the Madaras area and will have a 1.800 meter depth that will evaluate the oil deposits discovered here in the 70′, as well as new potential accumulations. The Moftinu well will evaluate the potential of gas and oil deposits in the respective area.

Exploration works in Satu Mare started in 2004, when Rompetrol bought concessions in Zegujani and Satu Mare for exploration and exploitation.

The exploration potential of the Satu Mare block has been established after the interpretation of over 1.100 km of 2D seismic profiles that were collected between 1970 and 1990 and the data resulting from 70 wells that have been drilled prior to 2004.

The exploration operations will be managed and monitored by a joint-team of Rompetrol and Winstar Romania, subsidiary of Winter Resources Canada.

Rompetrol Group has allocated over USD 5.5 million for the acquisitions of perimeters, seismic and geological studies, between 2009 and 2010.
