Investments in the transport logistics network, opportunities for Gebrüder Weiss customers

Similar to a living organism, business development depends on a well-functioning system of goods movement, with centralized coordination to ensure a smooth flow. The role of a logistics and transport service provider in this system is both to take on the complexity of the processes and to develop in such a way as to distribute individual benefits to its customers. To this end, Gebrüder Weiss Romania’s investment strategy at the national level allows it to offer its partners the best conditions for commercial success.

On the Romanian territory, where road transportation is often the only viable option, even for longer distances, traffic or weather conditions are prone to unpredictability and delays. The carrier must position itself in such a way as to minimize the impact of these challenges and to maximize the chosen package of services for each customer.

The main way that Gebrüder Weiss Romania has chosen to do this, is the creation and continuous development of a network of logistics centers in the main geographical points, offering a full range of services. Recently, the logistics area managed by the company has been significantly expanded with the development of branches in Sibiu and in the Bucharest-Ilfov area.

The Sibiu branch, established in 2010, was expanded in 2017 and 2022 to meet the volume of goods and customer requirements. The branch currently carries out logistics operations on an area of 6,500 sqm, 100% owned by the company. Located in the center of the country, with direct access to the Sibiu-Pitesti highway, it offers a full range of services (national and international transportation, logistics solutions and warehousing), ensuring its position as a strategic logistics hub for national and international distribution.

In the south-eastern area of the capital (Popești-Leordeni), with an investment of 20 million euros, the construction of a new logistics terminal has started, with the purchase of a 70,000 sqm land, which will allow the expansion of the terminal in the future. The new logistics center will have a total area of approximately 17,000 sqm and will be located near the highway to Constanta (A2), but also near the future ring road of Bucharest (A0). Thus, Bucharest will be served by two logistics terminals, which will improve transportation times by avoiding urban traffic. The new terminal will also offer a full range of services: FTL and LTL, less-than-truckload, warehousing and logistics, including road transportation of dangerous goods, customs and home delivery.

Both locations offer a wide range of services that can be tailored to each customer’s needs. An example of this is groupage transportation. Its main advantages are the optimization of delivery costs by dividing the available space in the means of transport, the fact that departures do not depend on the individual volume of goods per destination and the possibility of using several routes.

At the same time, groupage requires excellent logistical coordination to meet the preferences of each consignee in terms of loading/unloading locations and delivery times. For this reason, in both Sibiu and Bucharest, emphasis was placed on cross-docking terminals with the role of accelerating delivery: goods are loaded by the supplier, with delivery instructions to the final customer, then unloaded at the logistics facility and transferred to vehicles for further delivery, minimizing or eliminating storage.

In addition to geographical positioning and a complete service package, the digital tools implemented for both employees and customers represent another long-term strategic investment: they simplify access to the complex logistics system and provide the necessary information in a timely manner for decision-making. The myGW portal, which integrates services such as Track and Trace or ETA (Real-time Estimated Time of Arrival) and documentation management, allows customers to always keep track of the status of their shipments, while process automation makes it easier to exploit the benefits of the logistics hub network.
