Primark, the international fashion retailer, has today opened its first store in Romania at ParkLake shopping centre, Bucharest. H.E. Mr. Paul McGarry, Ambassador of Ireland to Romania, as well as Mr. Horia Tomescu, Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Bucharest, attended the opening event as guests of honour and welcomed Primark to the Romanian market.

The much-anticipated new flagship store, located at ParkLake Shopping Centre, welcomed its first customers through the doors at 10am this morning. With an investment of over €10 million in the new store and hundreds of jobs created in the local economy, the opening marks an important milestone for Primark as the retailer enters its 15th international market. The new opening is part of Primark’s ambitious growth plans in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), where the brand already has stores in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovenia. Primark has also announced a second store in Bucharest in the AFI Cotroceni Shopping Centre, which is expected to open in 2023.

The new Primark ParkLake Bucharest store spans 40,200 sq feet (3,700 sq metres) across two floors, bringing Primark’s unique formula of the latest trends and everyday essentials at great value prices to customers in Romania for the very first time. Arriving just in time for the festive season, customers can look forward to shopping the range of clothing, accessories, homeware and gifting.

Many of the clothing ranges in Primark Bucharest ParkLake are part of the retailer’s growing Primark Cares label, which is Primark’s pledge to make more sustainable products that everyone can afford. Primark’s recent Sustainability and Ethics Progress Report outlined the progress the retailer had made on the commitments set out in its sustainability strategy. Already, 45% of Primark’s clothes are made using recycled or more sustainably sourced materials, up from 25% a year ago. The retailer has committed to make 100% of its clothing from recycled or more sustainably sourced materials by 2030.

Maciej Podwojski, Head of Sales, CEE at Primark said:

“We are delighted to open the doors of our first store in Romania this morning. Opening in our fourth market in Central Eastern Europe and our 15th market internationally is a proud day for our business and our colleagues, and we are excited to welcome customers into our beautiful new store. We have ambitious growth plans in CEE and today’s opening is our first step in Romania – with more to follow. A massive thank you to all our colleagues who have been working hard to ensure we are ready to welcome our customers during the busy festive season.”

Paul McGarry, Ambassador of Ireland to Romania present at the event opening commented:

“I am delighted to welcome Primark to Bucharest, and I look forward to participating in the opening of its first store here. Primark (or Penneys as it is known in Ireland) has enjoyed wonderful success in Ireland, the UK and across Europe. I have no doubt that it will continue its success story in Romania.

The opening of a flagship store here in Bucharest by such an iconic Irish brand is a testament to the potential of the Romanian market and the growing trade and people to people links between Ireland and Romania.”

Horia Tomescu, Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Bucharest said:

“I am happy to be with you at the inauguration of the first Primark store from our country. The capital is the largest and most dynamic city in Romania. A city the size of Bucharest always needs new jobs, and needs a wide variety of products. Welcome to Bucharest!”

Catalin Cucian, Center Manager ParkLake added:

“We are proud to host the opening of the first Primark store in Romania, strengthening the ParkLake portfolio with a renewed international brand. Primark perfectly completes our tenants mix and we look forward to being part of this inauguration.”

Central Eastern Europe is an important growth region for Primark. The retailer currently has a store in Slovenia, two stores in Czech Republic and four stores in Poland, with plans to open two more stores in Poland by the end of 2023. Primark’s ambitious plans will also see the retailer opening its 16th market in 2023 in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava, bringing the CEE store footprint to 12 stores across five countries.
