ING Bank & RBL analysis: Top 10 entrepreneurial companies from the counties of the North-West Region grew by 34% in 2022

The 60 largest companies in the North-West Region (the first 10 companies from Bihor, Bistrita-Năsăud, Cluj, Maramureș, Satu-Mare and Sălaj counties) generated a turnover of 22.564 billion lei, up by 34, 2% compared to 2021, when they recorded 16.802 billion lei. In total, 497 entrepreneurial companies from the North-West region have export activities, according to the ScaleOut 4×10 study, carried out by the Romanian Business Leaders Foundation (RBL) and ING Bank Romania.

Cluj County ranks first in terms of the total turnover of the 10 largest entrepreneurial companies, of 6.27 billion lei in 2022. Cluj county has the most entrepreneurial companies with a turnover of over 10 million euros, 110 to be exact, but also the most companies with export activities, respectively 145. At the same time, Cluj county recorded the highest increase in of the total turnover in 2022 compared to 2021, by 70%.

Bihor County

The total turnover of the 10 largest entrepreneurial companies in Bihor county increased by 31% from 3.07 billion lei in 2021 to 4.03 billion lei in 2022. Agriculture, transport and construction are the fields in which they operate the largest entrepreneurial companies in Bihor County.

In total, 90 entrepreneurial companies from Bihor county registered a turnover of over 10 million euros, according to the ScaleOut study.

Cluj County

The total turnover of the 10 largest entrepreneurial companies in Cluj County increased by 70%, from 3.69 billion lei in 2021 to 6.27 billion lei in 2022. Energy, construction, car import and agribusiness represent the fields from which the largest entrepreneurial companies in Cluj County come from.

Currently, 110 companies founded by entrepreneurs have a turnover of over 10 million euros.

Satu Mare County

The total turnover of the 10 largest entrepreneurial companies in Satu Mare County increased by 18.5%, from 4.3 billion lei in 2021 to 5.1 billion lei in 2022. Trade, food industry and import of auto parts dominate the hierarchy of the largest entrepreneurial companies in Satu Mare county.

In total, 73 entrepreneurial companies from Satu Mare county have annual revenues of over 10 million euros.

Salaj County

The total turnover of the 10 largest entrepreneurial companies in Sălaj county increased by 19%, from 843 million lei recorded in 2021 to 1.03 billion lei in 2022. The food and construction materials are the industries where operate the largest entrepreneurial companies in Sălaj county.

19 companies created by local entrepreneurs have a turnover of at least 10 million euros, according to the ScaleOut analysis.

Bistrita-Năsăud County

The total turnover of the 10 largest scale-up entrepreneurial companies in Bistrita-Năsăud county increased by 19%, from 1.7 billion lei in 2021 to 2.1 billion lei in 2022. The field of machinery, construction and energy are the industries in which the largest entrepreneurial companies in Bistrita-Năsăud County operate.

In total, 46 companies founded by entrepreneurs have a turnover of over 10 million euros.

Maramures county

The total turnover of the 10 largest entrepreneurial companies in Maramureș County increased by 30%, from 3 billion lei in 2021 to 3.9 billion lei in 2022. Food industry, energy, agribusiness, utilities and equipment automation and transport are the sectors in which the largest entrepreneurial companies in Maramureș County operate.

In total, 49 companies founded by entrepreneurs have a turnover of over 10 million euros.

How many entrepreneurial companies in the North-West Region have export activities

In total, 497 entrepreneurial companies from the North-West Region have export activities, reveals the ScaleOut analysis, which includes companies with Romanian capital with a total turnover of at least 2 million euros. Also, 387 entrepreneurial companies in the North-West Region have a turnover of over 10 million euros.

Regarding the export activity, in Bihor county there are 139 companies, in Cluj county there are 145, while in Satu Mare and Sălaj there are 90 and 38 entrepreneurial companies respectively that have internationalization activities (they were not taken into calculation multinational companies). In Bistrita-Năsăud, there are 48, and in Maramureș county there are 46 entrepreneurial companies with export activities.

The ScaleOut 4×10 study aims to identify the largest entrepreneurial companies in the North-West region, the evolution of entrepreneurial firms, the number of exporting companies and the most important areas in which growth is recorded at the local and national level. The analysis took into account companies from the North-West region with Romanian capital with a total turnover of at least 2 million euros.
