The REGINA MARIA Central Laboratory has become the first laboratory in Romania to receive the JCI – Joint Commission International accreditation, which attests the rigorous compliance with quality standards and best laboratory practices at international level.

The accuracy of laboratory results, delivered to patients in the shortest possible time, is one of our main objectives. Thus, we invest constantly in the implementation of new medical technologies, as well as in all aspects that ensure the highest quality standards of laboratory medical care. The JCI certification, obtained for the first time in Romania by  a medical laboratory, attests the compliance to the highest standards of laboratory quality and accuracy, Corina Olăreanu, Director of the Laboratories Division, REGINA MARIA, declared.

What is the JCI accreditation?

The Joint Commission International is the World Health Organization’s first and only Collaborating Center for Patient Safety Solutions and the world’s leading international health accreditation. JCI represents the most prestigious and rigorous international accreditation a healthcare organization can receive, with hundreds of quality standards and over a thousand individual indicators evaluated to achieve it. Once the accreditation is granted, these indicators are periodically reassessed to confirm compliance with standards on a recurring basis. Currently, only 43 other laboratories worldwide hold the JCI certification.

Achieving the JCI accreditation reaffirms REGINA MARIA Central Laboratory’s alignment with the highest medical quality standards, after also having been the first RENAR-accredited laboratory in the country to use artificial intelligence. With the help of AI, the specialists at the Central Laboratory have implemented an automated results verification procedure, a procedure that meets international Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standards, reduces human error and guarantees the accuracy of results.

The process of accreditation and evaluation of laboratories for obtaining the JCI accreditation is centered on patient experience and safety, combined with continuous improvement of the quality of results and compliance with the best current practices. Therefore, the JCI certification obtained by the REGINA MARIA Central Laboratory confirms our patients’ access, in Romania, to laboratory medicine that complies with the highest international standards of medical quality, together with the most rigorous international objectives on patient safety”, Corina Olăreanu explained.

Over 20 million tests performed annually in REGINA MARIA laboratories

The REGINA MARIA Laboratories offer the full range of medical tests and analysis needed to accurately diagnose, treat and monitor patients, with the network’s doctors being accredited specialists in the use of the latest laboratory technologies. More than 20 million tests are performed annually in the network’s laboratories.

Beyond the sheer volume itself, the 20 million results are the constant work of an extraordinary laboratory team that helps write each patient’s medical story and helps confirm health or make rapid diagnoses – the first step in the treatment of any condition. This reconfirms the confidence our patients have in the medical laboratory services we provide, Dr. Andreea Alexandru, Primary Laboratory Doctor, Head of the Central Laboratory Bucharest REGINA MARIA.

REGINA MARIA laboratories can serve over 30,000 patients per day and have a capacity of over 75 million tests per year. The network has 37 laboratories and more than 170 collection points in all counties of the country and employs more than 800 medical laboratory specialists.
