Bioderm, with its 30 years of premium dermatology experience, has proudly inaugurated the Bioderm Hospital of Dermatology-Venereology in Saftica (Balotești, Ilfov county). This new medical unit boasts state-of-the-art technology geared towards skin cancer prevention, featuring over 20 medical lasers for various treatments, 32 beds, and a modern surgery unit along with internal medicine and recovery ambulatory services.

Health is a right! In this spirit, we open Bioderm Hospital, where we have the ability to provide services at the highest standards in the entire spectrum of dermatological conditions, reimbursed by the Insurance House. For over 3 decades we have been dedicated to dermatology and in all this time we have been connected to a diverse, complex casuistry and to the latest discoveries. We have continuously invested in the team’s know-how and state-of-the-art technology, for the benefit of the patient. We have been at the forefront of skin cancer prevention, through actions carried out throughout the country with the Melanoma MayDay mobile dermoscopy unit, free of charge to patients, and we are happy to continue this mission by opening the new hospital, soon followed by a nationwide expansion”, said Dr. Lucian Russu, dermatology-venereology specialist, founder of Bioderm.

One of hospital’s highlights is a modern state-of-the-art digital dermoscopy unit, Foto Finder Full Body ATBM Master, an advanced procedure that scans the entire surface of the skin, creating a detailed dermatoscopic map of moles. This rapid and non-invasive procedure gives doctors a clear and complete picture of the patient’s skin condition and allows early detection of skin cancer, including its most aggressive form – melanoma. The digital dermatoscope is the most advanced screening method for skin cancer, being introduced in Romania in 1999 by the Bioderm team.

“The opening of Bioderm Hospital is not only a recognition of excellence in dermatology, but another important step in the fight against skin cancer. The prevention of skin cancer and melanoma is a mission we have assumed for 20 years, when we introduced digital dermoscopy in our clinics, for the first time in Romania. The new hospital addresses an unmet need for such integrated dermatological medical services, based on prevention, diagnosis and treatment.”, said Dr. Claudia Sprâncenatu, CEO of Bioderm.

Skin cancer, an increasingly pressing condition

The incidence of skin cancer has been increasing in recent years due to repeated sun exposure without sunscreen, climate changes and artificial tanning. Among skin cancers, melanoma is the most aggressive form: 75% of people diagnosed with metastatic melanoma die within the first year of diagnosis. Diagnosed in an early stage, melanoma can be curable in a proportion of 95%, dermatoscopy playing an important role in prevention – a non-invasive and painless investigation.

In recent decades, the frequency of melanoma has increased 15 times, affecting more and more young people. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, worldwide, every hour, one person with melanoma dies, and for 2015 it was estimated that 9,940 people died as a result of this form of cancer. In Romania, almost a third of patients with this form of cancer die annually. In fact, our country registers an increasing incidence in the last 25 years – from 1.2 to 4.5/100,000 people diagnosed with melanoma.

Anyone can develop skin melanoma, but the risk is higher depending on genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors:

  • Light skin, eyes and hair;
  • Numerous moles, personal or family history of skin tumors;
  • Severe and repeated sunburn, especially before the age of 15;
  • The habit of artificial tanning.

Phototherapy and laser therapy, the gold standard in dermatology

The hospital also has a modern phototherapy unit for treating various dermatological conditions, but also for rejuvenation. Phototherapy is based on light at a controlled intensity to treat multiple diseases: acne, alopecia, couperose, rosacea, dermatitis, psoriasis, vitiligo, atopic dermatitis, etc. These include blue light therapies BLU-U, ClearLight and Omnilux(indications in acne), red light therapies Omnilux Revive or Collagen Bed Therapy (indications in rosacea, couperose and other inflammatory conditions, rejuvenation), UV light therapies aiming to treat psoriasis.

The new hospital also features more than 20 modern surgical, cosmetic and vascular medical lasers designed to excis skin tumors, moles and other benign or malignant formations, treat several dermatological conditions (onychomycosis, vascular lesions, varicose veins, vascular stars, hemangiomas, venous malformations, scars) or dermato-aesthetic (tattoo removal, rejuvenation, anti-wrinkle, etc.).

Patients from all over the country can benefit from reimbursed consultations. Medical services are reimbursed within the limits of available funds, after their exhaustion, patients can benefit from “fee for service” services or based on a private health insurance. Biodermwill soon announce reimbursement news regarding dermatological interventions within the hospital.

The new hospital also has 32 parking spaces and operates according to eco-principles, using green energy.
