Domeniile Ostrov records a wine production of 10 million liters this year, an increase of over 11% compared to the volume of 9 million liters recorded last year, and from December the company started exporting to China, according to Aurel Stefan, the company’s commercial director.

”Harvesting is over and November and December are much better on the sales side. Both wine and canned goods have a seasonality in sales. Also, the last quarter of the year is the best for wine, because of the holidays. This year we excelled in tomatoes and peas, where we had very good yields, but not in beans, because of the drought. For peas, we have a growing demand from year to year, we are thinking of growing a little. We are the biggest producers of Fabio cucumbers,” said Aurel Stefan.

Also, in the first ten months of this year, the company records a value advance of 75% of sales of canned goods and 15% of sales of wine.

In addition to the hectares cultivated with vines, the company also owns land on which it grows peas, garden tomatoes or other vegetables. This year, the production of peas was 62% higher than last year, while the tomato harvest increased by 50%.

According to Stefan, the company also had a good harvest of peaches, and 2023 is the second year in a row that the company produces peach compote with halves of fruit.

The company sells, annually, the entire production of wine, except for a quantity of about 2 million liters that it keeps in stock for aging for periods of three to six years. The company owns a vineyard area of 1,200 hectares in Constanța county, DOC Oltina and IG Terasele Dunării and 200 hectares of vines with table grapes.

Domeniile Ostrov exports approximately 10% of wine and canned food production, especially in states with large Romanian communities.

“There are many importers who want to buy zacusca or jam or beans. We export an average of 10% of our wine and canned goods production. We already sell outside of Europe, and from this month we also deliver to China. We take it step by step. We sell 90% of the production annually in Romania in the retail area, a little horeca and online. But, from year to year our export also increases and we do not exclude any market”, added Stefan.

For the next year, Domeniile Ostrov will maintain the areas cultivated with vines, but depending on the market, they could expand the areas in the vegetable area. The company plants vegetables and fruits according to demand and could increase the areas cultivated with peas or tomatoes by 200 hectares annually based on partnerships with local farmers.

According to Ștefan, the demand for Romanian vegetables on the market is “very visible”, and the company has already contracted all the production for next year. He also received an offer to grow vegetables including in Egypt, but is still evaluating this eventuality.

At the same time, due to the fact that energy prices have stabilized this year, the company does not foresee the risk of price increases for the first three months of next year.
