Agriculture and industry fueled Romania’s 2.5 percent GDP rise in 2011

Romania’s agriculture reported a net output growth of 11.3 percent in 2011 and was one of the main sectors responsible for last year’s 2.5 percent GDP rise, shows data released by the National Statistics Institute (INS) this Tuesday.

Other sectors that saw increases in 2011 were industry (5.0 percent), entertainment services, repairs of household products and other services (4.8 percent), constructions (2.7 percent), trade, vehicle and motorcycle repair services, transports and warehouse services, hotels and restaurants (1.2 percent).

2011 has been described as one of the best performing years for Romanian agriculture in the past decade. The corn harvest amounted to 11.4 million tons compared to 9 million tons in 2010, while wheat production was 7.4 million tons, up 25 percent y-o-y. Last year’s agricultural performance was mainly generated by good weather.

Romania’s GDP is estimated at RON 578.5 billion in 2011, up 2.5 percent y-o-y.  In Q4 2011 the GDP was down 0.2 percent against Q3.
