Deutsche Telekom’s revenues on the Romanian market have surpassed EUR 1.1 billion, exceeding those posted by the other telecom operators which have established a direct presence on the local market. Deutsche Telekom owns shares in four Romanian companies, Romtelecom, Cosmote, Germanos and Zapp, through the stake of 25 percent plus one share it bought in the OTE Group in a transaction with the Greek state in 2008.

The firm’s full year revenues for 2009 amounted to EUR 1.104 billion in Romania. By contrast, Orange, the largest operator on the local market by revenue and number of customers, posted revenues of EUR 1.055 billion last year. In Q4 2009, Deutsche Telekom’s revenues in Romania amounted to EUR 309 million. “The acquisition of the Romanian mobile communications operator Zapp by the Cosmote group resulted in an expansion on the Romanian market. The company was consolidated for the first time in November 2009,” stated the company’s annual report for 2009.

Its adjusted EBITDA (profit/loss from operations before depreciation, amortization and impairment losses) in Romania amounted to EUR 293 million last year. In Q4 2009, the EBITDA for Romania was EUR 66 million. The average number of employees increased sharply in 2009 compared with the previous year, mainly due to the first-time full consolidation of the OTE Group, whose headcount at the date of consolidation was 33,600. “Some 550 employees were included for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2009 due to the first-time consolidation of the Romanian company Zapp,” added the report.

In the Southern and Eastern Europe segment, revenue and adjusted EBITDA growth were largely driven by the consolidation of OTE. Exchange rate movements had a negative impact on revenues of EUR 0.2 billion and on adjusted EBITDA of EUR 0.1 billion. “Pleasingly, the margin in Southern and Eastern Europe remained at a high level of 40 percent for 2009 as a whole, and 36 percent in Q4. We achieved these large margins thanks to strong operating results,” said Timotheus Hottges, CFO of Deutsche Telekom.
