Teva Pharmaceuticals posts RON 70 million sales on local market in 2009

Teva Pharmaceuticals, one of the biggest generic drugs manufacturers worldwide, posted RON 70 million in sales on the Romanian market last year, an increase of 6 percent on 2008.

The company had a 5 percent market share at the end of last year, and was ranked the ninth largest generic manufacturer active on the local market.

Teva’s growth is due to the introduction of 13 new products from different medical treatment areas, including oncology, osteoporosis and cardiology, which generated almost half of the increase last year.

“These results are in line with the company’s objectives – that of exceeding the rhythm of the market. We intend to rise up the ranking of generic pharmaceutical companies present in Romania and to achieve a 7 percent market share by the end of year,” said Alina Luiceanu, general manager of Teva Romania.

She added that the firm’s main objective in 2010 was to increase the penetration of generics as a solution to ensure better access to modern treatments and savings for financial supporters of the health system. “A higher and more accelerated generization of drugs whose patents have expired, of about 80 percent of volume, would generate about EUR 50-60 million in savings annually for the health system,” said Luiceanu. Generics account for only 25 percent of the drugs issued by medical prescription and the figure is shrinking.

Teva Pharmaceuticals has been present on the Romanian market since 2006. It posted last year USD 13.9 billion of net sales at international level, an increase of 25 percent on 2008.

Its sales in Europe grew by 10 percent on 2008, reaching USD 3,271 million, as a result of the high level of generic sales registered in the whole region and in Germany, Spain, Poland and France in particular.
