Russian company OE Investments has launched its QIWI payment facility for local phone services. By the end of the year, 500 terminals are set to be installed in Romania. The range of payments received will be expanded by adding internet service providers, online games, commercial television, opera tickets, airline tickets and other services depending on customer needs.

The first QIWI terminals are already available in Bucharest, allowing payments for the services of the leading cellular operators, such as Orange, Vodafone and Cosmote, and also banking operations for customers of UniCredit Tiriac Bank. The terminals are installed in major shopping malls and busy areas of Bucharest. In the near future, QIWI payment services will also be available in the large cities throughout Romania, such as Cluj, Iasi, Galati and Constanta. In the more distant future, however, payments will be made via bank cards.

The company operates through both its own terminals and through a network of franchised agents, companies and entrepreneurs that can take possession of the equipment and connect to the central processing center. The price of the terminal ranges between EUR 2,500 and 4,000. The firm’s investment in Romania is EUR 500,000, while this year’s turnover is expected to reach EUR 1.5 million.

The main suppliers of payment services in Romania are Payzone, with 8,000 terminals and a turnover of EUR 46 million in 2009, and PayPoint, which has 2,900 terminals and an income of EUR 28.8 million.
