The initiators of the bill that proposes the chemical castration of pedophiles are confident that it will be passed by the Chamber of Deputies.
Alin Popoviciu, a Democrat-Liberal Party (PDL) deputy, member of the group that initiated the bill, believes that chemical castration will make those who have these urges to “think twice” about their actions, also saying that there are many foreigners who come to Romania because here the law is less strict than in other states.
“There are statistics regarding foreigners who come here and manifest these urges in Romania, they take children off the street, lure them with a chocolate because in Romania the law is much more permissive,” said the PDL deputy, quoted by Mediafax.
Popoviciu said he has the support of many colleagues in the Deputies Chamber, while some parliamentarians think that chemical castration should be replaced with life imprisonment.
Other deputies who support this law think that it will prove more effective in protecting children from abuse.
On the other hand, officials such as the leader of the PDL deputies Mircea Toader or National Liberal Deputy (PNL) deputy Eugen Nicolaescu do not agree with this measure, labeling it as ‘radical’ or ‘fascist.’
The bill was proposed by a group of PDL deputies: Claudia Boghicevici, Iustin-Marinel Cionca-Arghir, Catalin Croitoru, Tinel Gheorghe, Stelian Ghita-Eftemie, Mircia Giurgiu, Ioan Holdis, Doru Lese, Nicusor Paduraru, Stefan Pirpiliu, Alin Popoviciu, Marius Rogin, Valentin Rusu, Mihaela Sandru and Marius Spanu.
The senate has adopted the initiative but it is now pending approval from the Chamber of Deputies.
