Editorial: Towards more sustainable living

“The pharmaceutical and healthcare services industry approached maturity in 2023 after a difficult few years. The pandemic forced the global healthcare industry to innovate and find solutions to previously unknown problems, but the local sector also saw problems in providing medical drugs and equipment without relying on imports. Though it is quite impossible for any country to become independent in the production of medicines or medical equipment due to the global nature of the R&D, it doesn’t mean that the local industry shouldn’t be supported to grow and better meet the needs of the population.

One of the major issues of the Romanian healthcare system is that it is significantly underfunded, receiving only 4.5% of the country’s GDP in 2024, unchanged from 2023 and close to the level of 2018, before the pandemic crisis. A budget allocation of 9% of the GDP for healthcare would bring us closer to the European standards.

Since a healthy society is a sustainable one, adopting the principles of circularity is one major step towards achieving this goal. This is why we’ve dedicated our cover story this month to the Deposit-Return System (DRS) and sat down with Gemma Webb, the CEO and president of RetuRO SGR, to talk about the system’s performance in less than half a year since its launch, as well as its long-term objectives. Officially introduced at the end of November last year, the Deposit-Return System (DRS) is a promising way for Romania to embrace the principles of circularity and become an example of best practices in the region.”
